Words should be avoided

We are living in a modern culture. You’ve probably known that English language has been changing significantly. Now I am going to give you some of the describing words that should be avoided in communication. Using these words now-a-days is an offensive or it may not be a polite.

Words should be avoided:


  • Handicapped,Cripple,Special

Instead of these words,one should use Person with disability,disabled.

  • The blind
Instead,use words like Blind,Visually-impaired,People who are blind.
  • The deaf
Instead,use words like deaf,hearing-impaired,people who are deaf.
  • Deformed,lame,maimed
Instead,use words like Mobility disability.
  • Retarded,mentally challenged 
Instead,use words like Developmentally disabled,intellectual disability.
  • Mute,dumb
Instead,use words like Non-vocal,person with non-verbal

  • Slow,special

Instead,use words like Learning disability.

  • Mental,crazy,lunatic,insane
Instead,use words like Mental illness,Psychiatric disability.

What is a Phrasal Verb?

Phrasal verbs are different than common verbs.Phrasal verbs can be made by a combination of Verb+Preposition or Verb+Adverb or Verb+Adverb+Preposition. Phrasal verbs meanings are quite different from its original verbs.Phrasal verbs make us to learn English difficult.

Let me give some examples.

Look After
Look after means take care of something.
We need to look after our parents when they getting older.
Answer for
Means be responsible for
Do you think parents are answer for their children’s behavior.

Cut down
To reduce something in amount

I need to cut down amount of Sugar I eat

Come across
To meet some one or something unexpectedly

I came across my school friend at Dilsukhnagar

Act upon/on
To do something definite about; Act according to

Acting on information from a member of the public.the police raided the club

Why don’t you act on her suggestion
Ask for
Ask to see or Speak to someone or To behave in a that is likely to bring something unpleasant

Letting the children play with street dogs way just asking for the trouble.

Ask after
Seek information about,in a sympathetic way(Especially about health).

Honey always asks after you in her mails.
